Porcelain Staffordshire fairing – tiny lidded box with porcelain tea set on top – has chips
Today I have learned about porcelain fairings. I previously thought they were the protective outside of a motorbike! These little gems would be a great subject to research and collect. One to keep and one to swap. These two have gone through 100 years of handling so have unfortunately damage to the tea pot handles and the flowers round the rim. Please look at the pictures carefully and dont hesitate to ask questions.
Wiki information: What is a porcelain fairing?
They were given away as prizes at the fairground and were mostly small porcelain ornaments. The word fairing (‘fayring’ or ‘fairin’ in old English) is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as ‘a present given at or brought from a fair‘ and it comes from the Latin ‘féria’ meaning a holiday.
